Making sense of the world right now


The world feels like it’s in chaos right now – we are not only going through a global pandemic, which is difficult enough, but there are riots and violence and a heightened state of energy that we are seeing, feeling and experiencing. This is a confusing, emotional and challenging time for many of us, and if you're like me, you might be trying to find a way to make sense of what you’re feeling and experiencing.


There are a lot of outward emotions being expressed on the news and across social media, but perhaps now is a time for more self-reflection. We need to look after our Self and dive in a little deeper to understand energetically what we are experiencing. If we are out of balance, we are not putting our best self forward, nor are we in the best state to enact positive, lasting change, or show quality leadership to others. When we act or behave from a place of fear or anger, we create separation, which is the basis of violence. The energy of love and connection is how we heal.

So lets talk about how you can come back into a state of calm, to then be able to put your best foot forward. The first step is to pause, and reflect internally. Humans are made up of energy, just as everything we see, touch, think and feel is energy. In our human bodies, we have 7 major chakra points. Think of chakras as spinning wheels of energy. I imagine them like the toy spinning tops that you might spin on your countertop. When you spin the top with too much force, or you put it slightly off balance, the top will spin off wildly in a random direction. In the same way, if you spin the top with too little force it just falls over. But when you get the top exactly on its axis and give it just the right amount of force, it spins perfectly on balance.

This is exactly like our chakras. When there is too much or too little energy, our chakras don’t spin at the right velocity or produce the right energetic frequency, and the result is that it puts our whole body’s energy out of balance. This then causes dis-ease (physical pain, mental problems, emotional stress or spiritual disconnection). When our chakras are spinning on their axis at the right velocity, we are at ease (relaxed and inspired, and in alignment with our higher Self).

Root Chakra:

Located at the base of your spine, the Root Chakra is comprised of whatever grounds you to feel safe and stable in your life, including your basic needs of food, water, shelter, and emotional needs of interconnection and being fearless. Currently, there are a many people feeling very unsafe, insecure and fearful. If it’s not the fear of getting sick from CV19, it could be a lack of finances or resources to survive, it could be hunger, fear of violence, or a deep seated anger at the injustices that we’re seeing in our world causing fear of what the future looks like if we don’t do something now. This fear and insecurity causes our Root Chakra to spin out of balance – and when our foundations are off balance, the rest of our energetic house is on wobbly grounds.

Sacral Chakra:

Located around your lower belly, the Sacral Chakra or emotional centre is associated with your emotions and feelings, relationships, sexuality, pleasure, and creativity. When we experience intense fear, anger and insecurity, our stress response kicks in and we are in a fight, flight or freeze state. Stress hormones flood our system, and decrease our ability to think rationally, compromise our immune system, and affect our nervous system, causing a heightened level of anxiety, depression, lack of sleep, decreased memory, and irrational decision making. When we notice ourselves in a high stress state, it pays to pause, and take the time to calm our mind and body, before moving forward.

Solar Plexus Chakra:

Located at your solar plexus, this chakra point is responsible for our personal power. When we have a balanced Solar Plexus Chakra we feel confident and capable, we take responsibility for our life, we are self-assured, independent and have clarity. On the flip side, when out of balance, we have self-doubt, confusion, low self-esteem and self-confidence. This chakra is characterized by the element of fire, and we are certainly seeing a lot of fire in the world right now through rioting, violence and pushing back by groups of people asserting themselves. Too much energy in this chakra can be seen as excessive control and authority over your environment and people. But you might also be feeling the opposite – deficient energy in your Solar Plexus chakra can bring about feelings of helplessness, irresponsibility or denial.

Heart Chakra:

When open and in balance, Heart Chakra, located at the centre of your chest, provides love for yourself and others, compassion and empathy, forgiveness and acceptance, and can positively influences our relationships. However when Heart Chakra is out of balance, we might feel sad, lonely, closed off emotionally and mentally, jealous, and without forgiveness there is a tendency to hold grudges. Many people are grieving, and feeling a deep sense of sadness at the state of the world right now in many different capacities. When our hearts are closed, when we are experiencing fear and grief and uncertainty, it is hard to open our minds and bodies to compassion, empathy and understanding.

Throat Chakra:

Located at the throat, this chakra point is associated with communication, expression, speaking our truth and speaking up. We are seeing a lot of people speaking up and speaking out for what they believe in right now. But it is also possible to throw Throat Chakra out of balance. When there is an imbalance, it can manifest as a lack of control over one’s speech, speaking too much or inappropriately, not being able to listen to others, or telling lies. On the other side, too little energy at the Throat Chakra can cause excessive secretiveness or shyness, a fear of speaking up, or feeling a lack of connection between what you say and how you feel. Right now if you are feeling uncertain, angry or fearful, take the time to turn your attention inwards first before speaking – examine what you are really feeling, and then make guided decisions on how you express yourself.

Third Eye Chakra:

Third Eye Chakra, at the centre of your forehead between your eyebrows, is all about vision, perception, intuition, thoughts, inspiration and creativity. Stagnation, combined with fear and uncertainty, is a breeding ground for dis-ease and imbalance at this point. When we have a large group of people (all over the world) home bound and in isolation, then add in high levels of fear, stress and insecurity, we have a recipe for distrust and disconnection with our higher Self. We are not sure what to believe anymore. It is more important now than ever to practice self-care and compassion. That might be meditation or yoga, it might be energy healing such as Reiki, it could be taking time for yourself to sit and breathe deeply. It is vital to pay attention to your own inner state first, before judging others or jumping to conclusions. Take the time to bring yourself back into balance, and notice how your relationships shift around you.

Crown Chakra:

Located at the top of your head, Crown Chakra gives us access to our higher states of consciousness and reminds us that we are all connected. When open, we have more awareness, presence and wisdom, but when this chakra is blocked, we feel stuck, stagnant, limited and disconnected. Too much energy at the Crown Chakra could lead to being closed-minded and obsessive, or living in our heads. Too little energy and we have a disconnection between mind and body. I can’t emphasise enough the importance of taking time out to sit, breathe and reflect on your inner state. The more awareness you have of yourself, the more awareness you will cultivate of the world around you.
